The sjambok, a traditional South African whip, has its origins in Indonesian and Malaysian cultures, introduced to South Africa by Dutch colonists in the 17th century. Originally made from hippopotamus or rhinoceros hide, modern sjamboks are often synthetic. Historically used for livestock herding. Despite its controversial history, the sjambok remains a symbol of authority and power in certain South African communities.
